Basic Care For Cats
Should I bathe my cat?
When I was growing up, I had a cat who loved to swim with me, his name was Corky. He followed anybody around with a fishing pole. With that said, most cats arenot big fans of water. But, sometimes cats get stinky, just like dogs. There are options available for you, thank goodness. There are actually some waterless ways to bathe your cat using some powders and cloths that kind of take away the odor. You can also find a good groomer who specializes in caring for cats, say "Hey, I need a bath time for Buffy," and let them take care of it. If you are deciding to do a bath for your cat you have to be very careful. With that said, unlike dogs fortunately, cats don't need regular bathing done by us; they do quite a good job on their own, grooming.
Should I brush my cat?
There's a thing affecting cats that we all know about, but we don't like to talk about: hairballs. And one way to remedy that, or at least cut down on the hairball deposits on your wonderful Persian carpet, is to regularly brush and groom your cat. And when you brush your cat, you're doing many, many beneficial things. Not only are you reducing excess hair that they can actually swallow that would come back later and deposit as a hairball, you're also spreading the oils throughout their coat. That helps keep the coat healthy. You also have a chance when you're brushing your cat to make sure there's no bumps, lumps, nicks or anything that's out of the ordinary, that you could report to your veterinarian to get attended to.
Why type of brush should I use for my cat?
There's a lot of different kinds of brushes out there for your cat, and I'm glad that you're taking an interest in grooming your cat. With that said, what I advise you is, get the brush that's best suited for your cat's coat. There are certain brushes that are just specifically designed for short-haired cats, and there are certain brushes and combs designed specifically for long-haired cats. If you have any problems or questions, check with your veterinarian or your local groomer.
What are some tips about trimming my cat's claws?
When you first bring your cat or kitten home, this is the most ideal time to play what I call "touchy toes". And it's a benefit for you--trust me--in the long run. By getting your cat or kitten used to you handling their toes, it makes the regular nail clipping sessions go far easier. Cats need to have their nails clipped on a regular basis. Not only are you saving your sofa, but they need it so they don't get it snagged in carpets and get pulled and get hurt.So by touching the toes of your cat and playing and having a good time with it, your cat will be more receptive when it's time to do their "peticure".
How much daily attention and affection does my cat need?
Sometimes we think that cats are loners that they don't really need us, but, you know, they do. They're just more subtle about it. Cats are living creatures that really respond to your love. So I say, you know, when you have a cat, spend a little time. Even if it's just walking into a room, say the cat's name. Say "Hey, Murphy! How's it going?” and go about and do your business. Just acknowledge your cat, by saying your cat's name and saying hello or being in an upbeat voice, you'll be amazed how much that works in your benefit. Your cat will feel like he or she is part of the crew, part of the family. Scratch your cat under the chin or let your cat sit on your lap while you're watching your favorite sitcom. These little small gestures just show your cat that "Hey, you mean something to me."
What toys are healthy for my cat?
Cats like to have things that they can bat, and swat, and chase. There are some toys you can make at home. I mean, you can take a regular paper grocery bag, cut off any handles, and cut out the bottom, and lay it down. And then toss a toy in there, and let the cat run through this tunnel to stop this fake mouse. So you don't have to spend a million dollars to entertain your cat; you can use your imagination. So there's a lot of toys out there, or a lot of homemade things you have, that can entertain a cat for a long time.
