Did you have to 'train' with a pageant coach?
No, I did not use a pageant coach, because I didn't know they existed, because I don't have pageant history! So, I actually found out there were pageant coaches when I was within the weekend of the competition. I was talking to some girls, and they were like, "Yeah, I left for 4 months and went off with my pageant coach", and I was like "What's that?" And so, I learned quickly what a pageant coach was and no, I did not have one, just because I didn't know they existed.
How much preparation does it take to get ready for a pageant?
I really went in just on my own. A lot of these young women started when they were six. That was their preparation; they started four years before me.
Did you have to work out to get a bikini-ready body?
I think it depends on the person. To each his own. I personally wanted a trainer because I had just come back from China. I was in China for two months doing mission work. So the pageant was completely out of my mind when I was over there. I just felt like I've got to get into shape. Not that I was out of shape, but I just said I've got to tone myself. She was great. Three months we did it. I was in the best shape I've ever been. For me, it worked. It may not work out for other girls but for me it worked.
Do you have to do your own makeup and hair for a pageant?
Yes. I did not know that. I really thought that there were people that were going to do hair and makeup. At the orientation is when I was given the words of no you are not going to get your hair and makeup done, and I do not like doing my own makeup. I am not a fan, so when I heard that, I looked at my mom and I was like what do I do? I was terrified, so I had to learn. I went to a Mac store and I was like to show me how to do this and that. And they showed me and that was that. And I said OK, I will take whatever I learned and apply it to myself. But yes. We have to do our own hair and makeup. Absolutely.
