Where is the best place to learn how to be a builder?
If you are interested in becoming a builder, most colleges offer a range of courses which you can undertake to become a builder. You may want to contact the building firm who may be taking on apprentices, and you could train as apprentice on site.
At what age can I become a builder?
There is no legal, minimum age to become a builder, but you would have to be at least 16, because this age is the school leaving age. So, 16 would be the earliest possible for you to start work.
What building qualifications can I get?
If you are interested in getting qualifications then we would recommend that you get a National Vocational Qualification, which are offered by colleges of every education, and are the best route in.
Why are qualifications important?
Qualifications are important because they give you a competitive edge in the market place, and they also give you a degree of expertise as well, which other builders would not be able to offer.
Can females become builders?
Yes, women certainly can become builders, and we're trying to encourage more women to enter the construction industry. There's evidence that there's growing demand for women builders.
How much can a successful builder earn?
The FNB has over 13000 members, and our members have an annual turnover varying from between 100,000 pounds a year up to over 5 million pounds a year. So it very much depends on the size of the company and the work that you're carrying out.
What skills do builders need?
Obviously it's very important, in terms of skills, that you have a good understanding of building regulations, planning, health and safety. But there are also other skills, particularly communication skills, and having a pride in your work which would actually do your business a world of good.
