Business E-Mail Fonts

Tim Burress (E-mail Etiquette and Organization Specialist) gives expert video advice on: What are good fonts to use in a business e-mail?; What are fonts that aren't good to use in a business e-mail? and more...

Why should I use font formats in a business e-mail?

If you need to emphasize a particular point in an e-mail message, use a different font format, such as underlining something, bolding, highlighting, or even changing the font colour from black to red to blue. All this can emphasize a specific point. Of course if you overuse all that, it could diminish the emphasis that you're trying to place on something, so be cautious. But using font formats in your business email is a great way to make sure people focus on a key point.

What are good fonts to use in a business e-mail?

There are particular fonts that are easier to read in an e-mail than others. Most e-mail applications give you hundreds of fonts to choose from. Some of the better ones to read are the easier ones on the eye, such as Verdana, Franklin Gothic, Times New Roman, and Arial.

What are fonts that aren't good to use in a business e-mail?

Some fonts aren't good to use in business email as some of the fonts are harder to read. These can include any font which you convert into italics, or such fonts as Comic Sans. Those business e-mail fonts are oftentimes difficult to read for the receiver of an email.

What's wrong with writing a business e-mail in all capital letters?

Capitalization in a business e-mail is seen as shouting and most people know that. But it's also difficult to read when it's all in CAPS because it's hard to read a lot of sentences or a paragraph when everything is capitalized. Writing a business e-mail in all capital letters makes it hard to tell where a sentence ends and another one begins.
