Cerebral Palsy And Education
What is "cerebral palsy"?
Cerebral Palsy is also known as spastic paralysis and refers to a group of disorders that involve a loss of movement or a loss of nerve function. Students with Cerebral Palsy can be found eligible for special education supports and services if the IEP team feels that the nature of their disability is severe enough to merit special education supports and services. However, just because a student possesses Cerebral Palsy or was born with Cerebral Palsy does not automatically qualify him for special education services or supports.
How can I help a child with cerebral palsy with schoolwork?
Parents of students with cerebral palsy can support their children's goals by maintaining contact with the specialists and educators working with their children, and by being supportive and encouraging their children's growth in school. It's also important for parents of children with cerebral palsy to understand that they need to be realistic, and understand the limitations of their children's disabilities. Few things are more detrimental than parents that refuse to acknowledge those limitations and push their children too hard.
