Cheekbone And Chin Augmentation
What is a "cheekbone" or "malar" augmentation?
A cheekbone or malar augmentation usually refers to placement of a synthetic implant in the cheek area. It can be put in in a variety of different ways through different incision sites, either through the lower lid area, in through the mouth, or sometimes through an incision. The augmentation is a synthetic material that's placed onto the cheekbone, and usually placed on both the right and left cheeks. It's very common for patients that have lost cheek volume. Cheek implants have been diminished recently with the use of dermal fillers or other substances to restore some of the volume of the cheeks. Some of these would be Sculptra, Radiesse, Juvederm, or Restylane. This is a less invasive way to augment the cheek area.
What are the procedure and costs of cheekbone augmentation surgery?
Cheek augmentation may be performed by other procedure such as face lift or eyelid surgery. It will lead to a small amount of bruising in the incision area, but also in the cheek area, too. The cost involved in cheek augmentation can range from $4,000 up to $10,000, depending of the doctor.
What is a "chin augmentation" or "mentoplasty"?
Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty is a very common procedure for patients that have a weak or deficient chin. Many times it's performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty, or nose job, to put the face in harmony. In terms of the chin implant, there are really two types of chin augmentation surgery. One is what we call a sliding genioplasty, which is a fancy term for the chin bone being cut and advanced forward to give more of a chin projection. That's usually performed either by plastic surgeons or by maxofacial surgeons. For the majority of patients though, they do well with a chin implant, and that is a synthetic implant that is placed on top of the chin area. The incision sites are usually one of two places; either in the external area or placed into the chin through the mouth. It's a relatively painless procedure and patients do quite well with it. The cost involved for chin augmentation can range from four or five thousand dollars up to about ten thousand dollars, and the recovery is rather minimal.
