Company Regulations
What should I wear on "Casual Friday"?
Casual Friday has always been kind of a sore spot with me because I really think that the way we dress impacts how we work. On Casual Friday people can get into a lot of trouble if they don't follow some basic rules. When we say casual, we don't necessarily mean casual. We mean business casual. So leave the jeans and the flip flops and that sort of thing at home. All Casual Friday means is that you don't have to wear a shirt and tie or maybe you don't have to wear a really dressed up business suit during the day. It doesn't mean that you get to be overly casual and overly comfortable. Your wardrobe really needs to convey credibility and professionalism even on the most casual of Casual Fridays.
Should I always attend company functions?
With regards to company regulations, company functions are something that every employee should attend because it is an opportunity for you to do your own public relations in a company environment. Attending company functions is an opportunity for you to socialize and get to know your co-workers outside of the office. Your presence is going to be something that is most likely to be noticed if you are not there. So, do the right thing. Do a little bit of PR and promote yourself. Be at the company event and network with your co-workers, you never know if you might find a great mentor, another friend or another colleague right within the confines of your own company.
What are the do's and don'ts for employees at company functions?
When you're attending a company function it's important to remember that, technically, you are still on the job; you're at work. A company function is not just a social event. So remember that at a company function you are being observed by your boss, your supervisor, your manager, your colleagues and co-workers. You don't want to drink too much at company functions, or use inappropriate language or humour. Keep your behaviour still very professional, because again the company function is still a work environment. Also do use the company function as an opportunity to network with you co-workers, maybe reach out to people from Department whom you have never met before. You might be able to find a great new friend, a new mentor, or a new colleague.
