Competitive Eating Strategy And Technique

Arnie "Chowhound" Chapman (Competitive Eater) gives expert video advice on: What is your competitive eating strategy?; Why does your competitive eating strategy work best?; What technique do you use during competitive eating? and more...

What is your competitive eating strategy?

My strategy with pickles, I do have a technique that I patented, copyrighted... not really, but it is where you put two in a time. Obviously there are some types of pickles that don't lend itself to that, the long cucumber-type pickles you can not do two at a time and it is absolutely, I mean it is impossible. But basically, most competitions which would you either have delta-type pickles or the hard, sour-type pickles you can put two in at a time. And then, I put them in through my back teeth and I chomp them and then I do strong swallows. And I'm very methodical, I take them and put them in. You see, pickles you don't want them to just blast out in the beginning. You have got to get your rhythm. Rhythm is extremely important in pickles. And what is more important than getting off to an incredibly fast start is your technique taking the pickles and putting them in, chomping them, hard swallows and boom! Then go into the next one and not losing much time in between that. That is the technique I use and I am telling you if you want to be a champion pickle eater, after I give up the title, listen to how I am telling you to eat pickles, because I am on to something here.

Why does your competitive eating strategy work best?

Well, I'm going to tell you one thing about my competitive eating strategy, okay. There's a lot of guys running scared out there that have avoided me in pickles 'cause they know I'm onto something very magical, okay. You can get your revenge on me, alright. I was really planning to not let the cat out of the bag or let my secrets out, but videojug.com has talked me into it, okay. So I'm giving you the path to pickle glory and you need to follow it, okay.

What technique do you use during competitive eating?

I have a very special patented technique and it's called the wood chipper technique, but it involves putting in two pickles simultaneously. You put them in right by your molars in your teeth so you begin immediately to crunch and break down the pickle which allows for much easier swallowing. It's very important with pickles that you break them down and crunch them so that you can swallow them. People run into problems, they don't break them down and they're trying to figure out how to swallow it. What you've got to do is break it down right away, break it down hard, so when it goes into your mouth, you're good to go and you can swallow it.

How did you achieve your competitive eating technique?

I achieved it because, I had won a pickle in Glen Cove in 1999, they used to do an annual pickle eating contest. So I knew I was pretty good with pickles, these were very large ones and then I had heard about a pickle contest occurring in the city and I said to myself, "You know, I won this other contest, I might be pretty good." And then I played around with the pickles a little bit, I kind of perfected it. So knowing that I was good in pickles I prepared myself and all the things that I've said in terms of what you should do as far as familiarizing yourself, developing yourself and your strategy, I didn't eat a million pickles, but I did take, every couple of days I would take a couple of pickles and I would do one minute runs and more importantly I wasn't so much developing my capacity to eat pickles, I knew I had this capacity, what I was figuring out was what do I do? At one point I was putting in one at a time and I said, "Hey man, maybe if I put in two at a time I can get them in quicker", and I did that. But also I realized too that if you put two in at a time you also have to break them down really quick and hard. So from just kind of playing around and getting ready for a contest I started to figure out this technique.

Why does your competitive eating technique work best?

It works best because I spend a good amount of time trying to figure out what was the best to eat pickles. Because pickles are so demanding and there's so much that goes on with pickles. From breaking them down, swallowing them and whatever, and all the things that I've talked about. So I think my technique, the test of my technique is that fact that I am the current world record holder. No one, has really come close to what I've done. I've seen some of my competitors and how they approached it. Guys who are drinking water. You don't drink water. You have water there in case you might need it because you have a big piece and you need to get it down, but for the most part, you don't waste time with water. So I've talked to other competitive eaters, found out about how they approached it and really collected information and figured out the way I was doing it was the best way to do it. So yeah, a little bit of research involved and also my own preparation.
