Ian "The Invader" Hickman (Competitive Eater) gives expert video advice on: How do you train for a competitive eating contest?; What training techniques work best for competitive eating?; Should competitive eating beginners train at home? and more...
How do you train for a competitive eating contest?
I would advise not to train. It is not safe to do it home without supervision without having an EMT or whatever you think I'm just trying to cover the bases here. Personally I train eating green beans. I prefer French cut style because I like to bite and swallow, not too much water aid in that. You are able to get a high poundage up with doing that as well. I know that a lot of eaters train differently. Some people use water. Some people use Gatoraid. Some people use spaghetti. I have heard of oatmeal, dry oats. I have heard of rice, many pounds of rice. Dry rice because it expands in your stomach. There is a whole slew of things you could train with but the idea is to find what works best for you if you are going to do that- which I do not advise you do. But if you do decide to do it, you need to find what works best for you.
What training techniques work best for competitive eating?
The question for what techniques work best is really vague on whenever you're training. It depends on what kind of contest you're going to be going into. I personally like to train for capacity so I try to emulate in whatever I'm training with in bulk to get to a certain poundage that I feel that I'm comfortable with. When ever I say comfortable I mean it's extremely uncomfortable but really depending on the contest. I know a lot of eaters like to train for a minute like do a sprint with if they're doing a hamburger contest you know. Do some hamburgers you know see how many they can get down in a minute and that will kind of give you an idea of how you're going to do in the contest because you're going to start trailing off after that first prime minute or two. So go as hard as you can the first minute with that food if you're going to train that way and get proof from there.
Should competitive eating beginners train at home?
No...but if you're going to train period, which I do not advise, you're going to...it's going to best if you have someone there whenever you are doing your training, whatever it is. Even if it's just a minute run, even if it's just thirty seconds, or if you're going to do a couple pounds of "x". It's always best to have someone there in case you do choke, you pass out, you get overly excited because you just did fifty hot dogs in ten minutes and you jump up and down and you hit your head. It's always good to have someone there just in case of whatever may happen.
Can I die from competitive eating?
Kobiyashi was quoted as saying, "To be professional, you don't die." So I guess if you die, then you're an amateur. And you don't know and you weren't expecting how difficult competitive eating is. I guess that's what he meant.
