Computer Hardware And Software
How do I choose the right hard drive for my needs?
If you're buying a new computer, you have to take into consideration what kind of hard drive you want with it. Bear this in mind: bigger is always better. Hard drives come in three different speeds as well, and in this case, faster is always better. You have to bear in mind the fact that a faster, bigger hard drive will cost more. If you're buying a second drive to put into your computer, the same rules apply: bigger is better and faster is better, even though it is more expensive. If you do not know what you're doing, please get somebody who does know what he's doing to put the second hard drive in for you.
What does "plug and play" mean?
Plug and play just means that you have a piece of hardware, like your mouse, that you want to plug into your computer. Your operating system has drivers that allow you to plug it into your computer. The driver will understand that you're plugging in a mouse, and it'll tell your operating system that, and you'll be able to use it.
What is a "plug in"?
A plug-in's like a little piece of software that's usually related to your web browser. Like if you want to watch video, you're going to need a plug-in so you can do that. So they're usually free and they plug right in to your browser, hence the name.
What is a "driver" and when should I use one?
There are certain pieces of hardware that when you plug in, your operating system doesn't recognize. At this point it doesn't have the driver; it doesn't have that piece of software that tells the operating system what it is that you're plugging in. You usually get a CD that you can put into your computer that'll tell the operating system what driver to use. Alternatively, you can go online and download the necessary driver.
What is "Linux"?
Linux is an operating system that gearheads like me love to use because it's a very streamlined application that doesn't use a lot of resources. With Linux, you have more space and more processing power to do more things.
How do I make the switch to Microsoft VISTA?
If you're thinking of switching over to Vista, I'd say don't. A lot of the hardware out there today was not made for Microsoft Vista, and only the computers that are shipping today are. But Microsoft does have a little tool online that will allow you to check if your computer system does run Vista. So if you're thinking about upgrading, the first thing you have to do is go to their website and check if your system is compatible or not.

Macintosh updates their operating system every year or so and you just have to buy a commercial version of the operating system. Put it on and the Mac will take care of it for you.
