Dealing With Student Debt
David Malcolm (Student Finance Policy Officer) gives expert video advice on: How can I avoid spending my student loan too quickly? and more...
Who can I speak to about my financial problems?
When dealing with student debt and speaking out about financial problems, most students' unions, universities and colleges will have an advice or welfare centre that can offer students advice and guidance on all sorts of issues, but certainly on financial issues and problems. Therefore, you can go along and speak to them and need not to worry if you have got into financial difficulty as a student. They'll have dealt with lots of students before in very similar financial situations and will be very sympathetic and will not be judgmental about how you got yourself in this financial problem. The important thing to do is to deal with it and get help as soon as you can, rather than leaving it too late, because the earlier you go the easier the problem is to sort out as a general rule. It may not be so easy if you deal with it later on.
What organisations are there that can help with my debt?
In the university or the college, most student unions will have a welfare and other advice centre where you can go to speak to someone to discuss your problems with student debt. Alternatively, the university or college themselves will have financial advisors that can talk to you and help you with your problems. In the weighted sense, there are also organisations such as the Consumer Credit Consoling Service who can help you if perhaps you have large non-student related debts and are having difficulty sorting things out with creditors, etc. There a range of people that can help you with student debt, and the important thing is to look for that help and make sure you get it as quickly as possible.
