Depilatory Creams

Josephine Wackett (Skincare specialist - Principal, Steiner Beauty Training) gives expert video advice on: What are depilatory creams?; What are the advantages of depilatory creams?; What are the disadvantages of depilatory creams?

What are depilatory creams?

Depilatory creams are products which are very strong alkali. They affect the hair by decomposing it at skin level, and fractionally, into the mouth of the follicle. The follicle is the little pocket which the hair grows from. Being a cream, depilatory creams go a little bit deeper than a razor and the shaving effect. They work very well by removing the hair on a temporary basis. The hair has not got quite such a stubbly end to it, so when it re-grows, it doesn't feel quite as rough. Depilatory creams are dangerous if they're used too often, because they have quite a strong effect on the surface of the skin. They should be used according to the instructions on the product. They leave the skin, usually, with a slightly strange smell, which is difficult to wash away, but it does wear off within twenty-four hours.

What are the advantages of depilatory creams?

Depilatory creams are quite effective. In the short term, they're easy, they're not too expensive and they're not painful. Care must be taken that the skin is healthy; that there are no skin problems and no sensitivity at all. Depilatory creams do help in an area such as the underarms, on a short term level. It lasts a little bit longer than shaving, but it is not something which you may want to do on a regular basis, but it's a very effective, quick, cheap fix for unwanted hair.

What are the disadvantages of depilatory creams?

Depilatory creams have a few disadvantages. They must be very carefully used. They can't be used everyday in the way that shaving can. They last a bit longer than shaving but they do have quite a strong effect on the surface of the skin, because to be strong enough to dissolve the hair they must also have a slight effect on the surface of the skin, which is why they shouldn't be used too often. The skin must be very healthy and not too sensitive. There can't be any signs of any problems to the skin because then it would be a mistake to use any strong product like a depilatory cream. They can have a rather strange smell to them which lasts for up to a day. It does disappear but it's not very pleasant.
