What is a 'hysterosalpingogram'?
A hysterosalpingogram is a radiology examination which involves placement of some iodinated contrast material into the interlining of the uterus in order to outline it. We can tell whether or not there are any abnormalities of that interlining. In addition, we inject that material into the uterus in order to determine whether or not your fallopian tubes which lead to your ovaries are open.
What is a 'hysterosonogram'?
A hysterosonogram is an ultrasound examination where some water is injected into the inner lining of the uterus in order to determine if there are any abnormalities of that lining.
What is a 'galactogram' and what is it used for?
A galactogram is a form of mammographic procedure, where some iodine dye is injected into the ducts of the breast in order to determine if there are any abnormalities within those ducts. Galactograms are typically done in patients who have either bloody discharge from the nipples, or if they have excess production of any other secretions.
What is a breast ultrasound?
A breast ultrasound examination is an ultrasound examination of the breast, which uses standard ultrasound techniques. It is very useful in determining whether or not masses are solid or cystic. In other words, whether or not they contain fluid.
What is a breast MRI?
Breast MRI examination is performed on an MRI unit with special equipment that allows detailed imaging of the breast. The reason for performing such an examination is to give us some additional information about whether or not breast cancer might be present. This frequently performed after an abnormality is discovered on a mammographic examination, which is questionable. It also can be performed in some women who have a strong family history or other major risk factors for breast cancer. How often does a pregnant woman get an ultrasound and what does the doctor look for?
Obstetric ultrasound should be performed only under the advice of your obstetrician. It is useful in some instances in determining whether or not you have any abnormality of your developing baby. In some instances you might be at a higher risk for abnormalities, either of your pregnancy, or of your developing baby. We leave that up to the advice of your obstetrician.
