Emergency Vehicles And Law Enforcement
Reed Berry (Driving Expert) gives expert video advice on: Should I pull over and stop for emergency vehicles while on the freeway? and more...
What do I do when emergency vehicles or law enforcement vehicles are approaching?
Emergency vehicles and law enforcement vehicles always have the right of way. So when you see one approaching, pull to the right and stop. If you can't pull to the right, let's say you're stopped at a red light, for example, just stay where you are. Don't run the red light. Let the emergency vehicle go around you, or wait for law enforcements to direct you through that light.
Should I pull over and stop for emergency vehicles while on the freeway?
If you're driving on the freeway and you see an emergency vehicle coming, don't pull to the right and stop as you would on a surface street. Simply move into the right lane, slow down a little bit, and allow the emergency vehicle to pass before you pull out and continue driving at highway speeds.
Tips & Comments
Anonymous....the officer did the right thing. You were in the wrong. Now that you know the law, people are safer, especially the officer who had someone else already pulled over. Officers die quite often from folks that don't use their noodle and don't give space to the stopped patrol car and whoever is pulled over. Space=safety. The slower and farther moving traffic is from stopped vehicles, the safer all are. Drive smart.
I was driving on a 2way road with emergency vehicles coming from the other direction (towards me). Do I have to pull over on the right? If so why? The car in front of me did and there was no reason we were not hindering the vechicles in any way. K
I was on Alligator Alley. I saw Sheriff's s giving tickets , then behind me a sheriff's car with blinking lights was following me. I thought he was going to pass as I was going the speed limit and cars and trucks in the left lane were exceeding the speed limit. I realized it was me he was after. I asked him what I did wrong. He said I did not follow the pull over rule. I saw the police cars giving tickets, however I did not think that was part of the rule. He said I should have pulled into the left lane ( a 2 lane highway) or I should have slowed by 20 mph. Please help
