Although what's happening now contemporarily is that we are actually bringing gifts to the party. Like these are our pals. We know that they are going to enjoy a DVD or a bottle of wine or something and so we bring it. Those things are okay. You should never open up the gifts at the engagement party. Keep them aside just in case someone hasn't brought a gift, you don't want to make them feel embarrassed.

If you're having a casual event, have some fun. Put in a big poster board with lots of pictures of the couple, how they met, maybe the story about them, because you're having the groom's friends and the bride's friends. This could be the first time they're meeting each other, and meeting the couple themselves, and you want them to get to know the couple and their friends.
