Entering A Marathon
How do I choose my first 'marathon'?
I think the best marathon for a beginner is one that's an easy marathon. The topography of the course should be very easy. The flatter the better; maybe a little extra downhill, because the first experience is one that is difficult on a person from a psychological and physiological standpoint.
How do I apply for a marathon?
To apply for a marathon, you can contact the marathon office. They'll send you an application. You'll fill it out and mail it in, or you can go online and fill out an online application. They'll give you a number, and you'll go out and run.
Do I need a doctor's clearance before entering a marathon?
It is important when you run a marathon, that you see a physician I think, and let them know what you're going to do. There's quite a bit of stress on your body, and so I think every athlete should, but it's not mandated by the organizers of a race yet.
How do I prepare to run a marathon?
How to prepare for a marathon is a very important decision, as is the infrastructure you need to work with to put it together. Check with a physician to make sure that you're safe to go that distance and to do training. Thus, you start out very slow. Most runners that I coach, start out walking, and then add a little bit of running, and then as time goes by and the weeks go by, develop a higher level of conditioning. You add more run to your walking segments.
How much will running a marathon cost?
A marathon, I think is one of the most least expensive sports to be in. You need to buy a pair of running shoes, and running shorts, and a singlet to wear. Then, of course, you need to pay your entry fee. After that, it is pretty much putting the fuel in the tank en route to that race.
