Charles Triay (General Practicioner) gives expert video advice on: How do I clean my eyes when infected with conjunctivitis? and more...
Is conjunctivitis contagious?
Conjunctivitis is extremely contagious. Conjunctivitis is an infection of the outermost layer of the eye membranes. It is often bacterial but may also be viral. One of the reasons why it's very contagious is because people often, as a habit, touch their eyes more so when the eyes feel uncomfortable. They get the infective agent, be it a virus or bacteria, onto their hands, and, therefore, may easily spread it onto the other eye or to another person. You need to extreme your hygienic measures with conjunctivitis. You need to wash your hands thoroughly every time you've been close to somebody with conjunctivitis, possibly even using a nail brush.
