Fire Safety In The Kitchen
Mick Cumming (Fireman) gives expert video advice on: What fire safety rules should you follow when cooking?; What should you do if a pan catches fire? and more...
What fire safety rules should you follow when cooking?
With fire safety in the kitchen, the main safety rules you should follow when cooking would be to never leave your cooking unattended. For example, if you were cooking chips or something like that, you are never to go out or answer the phone. Always make sure that you keep an eye on what you're cooking.
What are the fire safety rules for electrical appliances in the kitchen?
With fire safety, and fire safety rules for electronic appliances in the kitchen, you should ensure that the appliances that you use do conform to the British Standards safety kite mark. You should also ensure that you don't overload sockets, i.e. three or four items in one socket, whilst ensuring cable leads aren't trailing over a hot stove, as this could cause a fire.
What should you consider if you use a deep fat fryer?
With fire safety in the kitchen, the things you should consider when using a deep fat fryer would be to ensure that you haven't got an old type chip pan fryer with a basket and no lid because these are really dangerous now and are always catching alight, causing fires in the kitchen when left unattended. So, my advice would be to use a modern-day deep fat fryer with a lid. Ensure that the oil is changed on the regular basis and you don't fill up the fat fryer completely full of oil; always use it about one third full.
What should you do if a pan catches fire?
If your chip pan does catch fire, and you're confident that you can tackle it and it's at the early stages of the fire, you should turn off the heat immediately, then you should use a wet, but not dripping, tea towel; you wring out the tea towel and place it over the chip pan fire. If you have got a fire blanket, use a fire blanket to cover the chip pan. Never throw cold water onto the chip pan.
