Getting Early College Credits
Will any of my high school credits transfer to college?
Certain high schools do offer some college courses. Some high schools have extra periods in their day where students can take college credit, but you really need to check with your high school counselor to confirm whether that credit is transferable.
Can an internship earn me college credits?
An internship can earn you college credits, but what students need to do is to get that qualified before they begin the internship, because certain colleges will offer it and certain won't. If it's a college student, often they can earn up to 6 or even 9 credits in an internship, but often it's in the major. For example, if they are a political science major, they may get a local government job as an intern and not get paid, but earn the college credits. It all has to go through an approval process.
What is "Summer Session"?
Summer session is typically a period of learning during the summer where students can earn credit. Whether it be in a high school, where the high school is offering a summer program where the student can take a course that's required and then either not take it during the next year in high school because they've already finished it, or make up for a poor grade that they recieved and take it again and have that poor grade either erased or disqualified. In colleges they sometimes offer summer sessions where students can earn college credits for certain courses where they may go for more hours or more intense because it's maybe a six week course verses a ten or twelve week course, but they can earn the credits that way as well. There sometimes not as many courses offered in the summer as there are during the regular session, and the enrollments are smaller and not all the schools offer them, but if available they can serve as an opportunity to get ahead with your credits, or if students have dropped a course for various reasons they can take a course or two over the summer and get some college credits.
What is "Dual Enrollment" and how can it earn me college credit?
Dual enrollment is when local colleges provide college courses in the high school for qualified students. A student could technically be enrolled in high school and in college at the same time, hence dual enrollment.
What is "Early Enrollment" to a college?
Early enrollment would be for very qualified students who are enrolling in college at a young age because they have met all the requirements, the high school can no longer give them courses at their level, and they have done extremely well on any standardized test that they have received. Usually highly gifted or gifted students would be of that standard. In saying that though there's another component to consider, which is the social, emotional growth of the student, so a student can be very, very bright on an academic sense, but maybe not have developed in an emotional, social sense in that regard, so there is some controversy surrounding early enrollment for very young students.
