Gun Owners Of America And Amendments
Larry Pratt (Executive Director, Gun Owners of America) gives expert video advice on: What is the 2nd amendment?; What is the 4th amendment?; How are the 2nd and 4th amendments in the GOA's favor? and more...
What is the 4th amendment?
The 4th Amendment protects Americans against search and seizure without a warrant. And without that protection, you have George III troops barging into people's homes and grabbing all sorts of things, including their guns. You have President Clinton doing the same thing for people who were unfortunate enough to be living in public housing projects, where Clinton didn't think they should have a gun, and police went door-to-door and collected their guns, very much in violation of the 4th Amendment as well.
How are the 2nd and 4th amendments in the GOA's favor?
Well the 2nd amendment protects an individuals right to keep and bare arms. The 4th amendment protects his right to own those without the government knowing whether he has them, and how many he has, and where he has them because it's not the governments business.
Does the second amendment apply only to militiamen?
No the second amendment; well it only applies to militiamen if we understand what militiaman means. Militiaman means, especially in the 20th, 21st century means every American. At the time that it was, in the 18th century, and in the 16th century as well it meant every man. It was universal and it was mandatory.
Why do your opponents feel that using amendments as an argument is outdated?
Well, our opponents feel restricted by fundamental law that can't be changed, and that's why they talk about a "living, breathing constitution." What they don't understand is every tyrant in the world has a living, breathing constitution. He can do whatever he wants. He's not restrained by something, so that "Maybe it was legal yesterday, but today I'm going to execute you for having done what was legal yesterday," or "I'm going to find you," or whatever. That's what the "living, breathing constitution" is all about. It's about tyranny. And all that we're really hearing from opponents of abiding by the Constitution, what they're really saying is, "We want a slow walk to tyranny."
