Gun Rights And Politics

Larry Pratt (Executive Director, Gun Owners of America) gives expert video advice on: How does the topic of gun rights affect a Presidential candidate?; What is lobbying with regard to gun laws?; How do lobbyists affect gun laws? and more...

How does the topic of gun rights affect a Presidential candidate?

You could ask Al Gore how the gun issue affects the Presidential candidates and actually President Clinton was rather decisive in his opinion. He said, I was wrong it was my fault by pushing the gun ban in 1994. I caused my party control of the congress.

What is lobbying with regard to gun laws?

Lobbying is explaining legislation to legislators who don't read the bills even that they write.

How much money is spent lobbying both sides of the gun issue?

There's a whole lot less money spent lobbying of any kind than the American people spend buying flowers.

Does money make a difference when lobbying for or against guns?

Money only makes a difference in lobbying in as much as it enables the lobbyist and the interest that he is representing, putting their view before members of Congress. Frequently, if you don't say something, legislators who are passing all kinds of laws that they know nothing about all the time, if they're not shown something is a bad idea, either politically or just it's a stupid idea, they're going to go ahead and pass it so the lobbyist provides an extremely important service in what goes on any sort of legislative body.

How do you feel about the push to require gun lobbyists to reveal how much they spend?

Far as I know, lobbying expenditures are being reported right now. We certainly have had to report ours for a long time, so if people are not reporting lobbying expenditures, my assumption is they either are not lobbying or they're breaking the law.
