Gun Violence Prevention
What is a gun lock?
A gun lock, sometimes a trigger lock, is something that I would advise never be used. They can't be used, they shouldn't be used, let's put it that way, when the gun is loaded. Because when attaching it, boom! You may fire the gun or when removing it you may do the same. So you're told to keep the gun unloaded. So now, if you're using a gun lock the way it was designed, you've got one more step not only trying to get that lock undone and that combination remembered, but you've also then got to load the gun before you can use it. Not exactly a good idea for an emergency. So, if you want to keep a gun from being stolen, because a gun lock isn't going to matter at all for keeping somebody from stealing it, put it in a safe. So a gun lock is just not a good in between at all.
Do guns come with a safety lock already?
Rifles, according to a very ill-advised federal law, now have to be sold with gun locks. And the first thing I would do with my gun lock is drop it in the wastebasket.
Why is there opposition to gun locks?
Gun locks are dangerous. Gun locks make it easier for criminals. Gun locks don't keep guns from being stolen. Other than that, I guess they're fine.
How long would it take to load and use a gun if it were locked?
Well, Governor Glendening didn't even load the Gun He was just working with an empty Gun It took him two minutes. He still would have then had to then load the Gun At this rate of speed it would probably have taken him another two to four minutes to total before he would have had the Gun ready.
Is the trigger lock sufficient as a safety mechanism?
Guns are designed in a very safe fashion. They're not going to fire unless you put your finger on the trigger. And even then if you have a pistol there are safeties on the gun that will prevent it from firing until that safety has been removed.
What is microstamping technology?
Micro Stamping Technology is one of the worse ideas to come along in quite a few years. It is the idea that somehow when a criminal uses a gun, the characteristics of the guns firing pen and other striations maybe there are left on them. The bullet itself as they go through the barrel of the gun will identify either the casing or the bullet and help solve crime. the problem with that is the criminal don't leave their gun at the scene of the crime, when they can take it with them it's a simple matter to fire the gun in another hundred time yourself and the markings would be completely different any markings that might left in the scene of the crime. California has studied this; they've done at least two out of state major studies. One was even a foreign company and the studies keep coming back, same not work.
