If you're applying hot wax to your skin and it doesn't come off in one go, the hot wax may damage your skin if you apply again because of the heat in the wax. However, with a gel you can repeat the process until you get every bit of hair removed.

If you run out of waxing strips, you can really use any cloth. You can use calico; you can use any cloth. If you're using the gel, you can always wash the strips and re-use them again.
