Higher Education Defined
What higher education qualifications are there?
Well there are a number of different qualifications. You can get a B.A., Bachelor Of Arts. B.S.C., Bachelor of Science. Then you have got special qualifications like an L.L.B.. Also, students can go into medicine as well. I mean then at post graduate level you have got things like masters and P.H.D. as well.
How long does a course last?
Well at undergraduate level, you are usually looking at a three year program. That is the majority of programs. So that would cover something like a B.A., B.S.C., L.L.B.. You can do a H.N.D. a high national diploma in two years and then medical courses will take longer than that. If a student is doing a language, so for example they are doing an undergraduate course in French or Italian, they usually take four years. Because the student will normally take the third year out in the country of the language.
What modes of study are available?
Well the majority of students studying at ISA will study full time but there are part time courses available as well. And students may be able to study part-time during the day, or alternatively part time in the evening. Students can study by distance learning, perhaps through the open university, or something like that. And also there are sandwich courses available where students will combine study with work.
What qualifications do I need to get into higher education?
Different universities will require different qualifications. So some universities will be looking at the more traditional qualifications such as A levels or international bacheloriate, which is becoming more common in the UK now. Also students can enter university with vocational qualifications, perhaps National Vocational Qualifications, NVQ's or vocational A levels. And also national diplomas. So there's a range of different roots into university and really each student should look at the university entry requirements to make sure that they're well versed in knowing which particular qualifications will get them entry into that chosen university.
