When were pom-pons introduced?
Pom-poms were introduced in the 1930s as made of paper. Then in the 1960s they changed them to vinyl pom-poms. We don't know exactly where the origin is, but the word pom is a French word meaning parade or display.
When was the first cheerleader association started?
The first cheerleader association was started in 1948. A gentleman by the name of Lawrence Herkimer living in Dallas, Texas, started the NCA organization which stands for National Cheerleading Association. And then in 1949 he started the first cheerleading camp which was held at Sam Houston State University.
What was cheerleading like in the 1950's?
Big skirts and big pompoms. Cheerleaders reached new heights in the 1950s. They became very popular because they thought it was a very exciting thing to support their male athletes in all sports. The way they were chosen was by the student body with their smiles or and the popularity.
Who were the first professional cheerleaders?
The first professional cheerleaders started in the 1950s by the NFL team, the Baltimore Cults. Cheerleading not only supported football, they also supported basketball. But in the 1960s, that's when cheerleaders supported all the other sports.
When were the first collegiate championships televised?
In 1978 the CBS Network broadcast the first collegiate national championship held by International Cheerleading Foundation. Because of that, it helped the cheerleading world have more respect and recognized how athletic they are. In the year 2000 the first world cheerleading competition was held in Germany. There were 12 countries involved. Third place was Germany. Second place was Chile and first place was the USA.
