Dan Sharp (Green Family Expert) gives expert video advice on: How can I make my parties and events more green?; What kinds of food and beverages can I serve at a green event?; What is 'organic wine'? and more...
What are 'corn plastic' utensils?
Corn plastic utensils are plastics made from corn, and the benefits of them is they are biodegradable. You can put them in your acomposter and it takes about 30 to 45 days to biodegrade.
What is 'sugar cane plastic'?
Sugar cane plastic is plastic made from the sugar cane stock. Once they have taken the pulp out to make sugar, then instead of throwing away the stock they can use that to make plastic utensils and things like that. That's also something to look for if you are having a party and need different cutlery or other disposable things to serve on.
What kinds of food and beverages can I serve at a green event?
There's a great selection of wines made from organic grapes, there's also organic cheese's, and lots of different organic foods, you may want to try out your local farmer's market, or your local health food to see what is available, but you can pretty much find anything in a more environmentally friendly form.
What is 'organic wine'?
Organic wine is made from organic grapes and also contains no sulphur. A lot of wines still contain sulphur because it is used to make sure the wine does not spoil, but you can find a lot of wines that are made with organically grown grapes.
What is the difference between 'soy-based' candles and 'petroleum-based paraffin' candles?
The difference between soy candles and petroleum-based paraffin candles are that soy candles are made with soy, which is a renewable resource, whereas petroleum is not a renewable resource. Also, soy candles burn longer and slower, which can give a nicer fragrance and they're also less toxic than paraffin candles.
What kind of napkins should I buy for my green party?
You should use recycled napkins or even better than that would be to find cloth napkins. I‘ve bought a lot of my cloth napkins at garage sales, which makes them very inexpensive. You can also make your own out of linen which is also cost effective.
Why are cloth napkins better for the environment than paper napkins?
Cloth napkins are better for the environment than paper napkins because paper napkins, in order to make them, you need to cut down trees. You need water and energy to make them, package, and ship them. So this is the whole process going into that whereas cloth napkins, once they are made, they can be washed and used over and over again, so it's less energy. Also, paper napkins will go into the landfill whereas cloth napkins can be used over and over and don't take up landfill space.
