How To Act In The Event Of A Dirty Bomb Attack
Erroll Southers (Former Deputy Director of the California Department of Homeland Security) gives expert video advice on: What should I do in the event of a dirty bomb attack?
What should I do in the event of a dirty bomb attack?
I would say, what you personally could do is listen to the information that's going to be given publicly and do not self-evacuate. One of the biggest concerns we have is that people, given the rumor or the information that the bomb is dirty, that they're going to self-evacuate. If we have a dirty bomb in a location, then we run the risk and the danger of people miles away self-evacuating, and then of course clogging up the transportation arteries for people that need to evacuate. So I would say, listen to the information. There's no reason for entities to not give the people correct information, and if they say "shelter in place", you should shelter in place. If they say evacuate, you should leave. But my greatest fear is that people will self-evacuate because they feel that if I get away from it, I'll be safe, and that may not be necessary.
