How To Adapt To The Food Customs Of Different Cultures
How can I adapt to the food customs of different cultures?
There is a great scene in the Joy Luck Club, when the American future son in law is eating with the Chinese family, his girlfriend's family, and he was unaware, and I think the rule is you want to sort of do a little bit of studying up on what to expect, and in a typical self-effacing way, the mother said, "Oh, this dish is not very good" and instead of his saying the expected thing, "Oh, no it's delicious", he said, "You know I think you're right, it could use a little more soy sauce." It's best to try and find out ahead of time what to expect, and when you're with people, to be aware of how they're doing things. Be observant; being observant is probably the best advice.
