How can I adopt my grandchild?
As a grandparent you can adopt your own grandchild following some of the same rules and regulations that govern any type of adoption. For instance, in order to finalize the adoption, the parental rights of the biological parent have to be terminated. However, there is a preference in the child welfare system for children to be placed with their kin so that they are maintained within the same network of family, friends and neighborhood. The process leading up to that adoption by a grandparent can sometimes be a little simpler and less time-consuming because of the preference for a child being placed with relatives when they're initially placed in foster care.
