How do I ask for a raise?
Oh I have a story about that actually, I was a trial attorney for Goldman, Magdalin & Krikes my first job review for the year I was given a raise and I was not made partner and for a first year attorney with a law firm I sort of expected that they were going to offer me a partnership so I called a meeting of the senior partners and went to lunch with them and said what gives how come I'm not a partner? Why didn't you offer me a partnership? I just don't understand. They all laughed at me and told me that I was over paid for what I did and sent me on my way. The moral to that story is you don't get it if you don't ask for it. They thought I was incredibly nervy to be asking to be made a partner in my first year with that firm, but that's also why they hired me because you have to have -- you have to be fearless, you just have to go out there and do it. Now with that said there's a tactful, tasteful way to do it and timing is everything. If you feel you're entitled to a raise and you know that you've given it your all and your doing a good job then you owe it to yourself to do a little research find out what you should be paid for your job, what you feel is fair. Be prepared to explain why because the boss is going to ask you why and be prepared for the boss to say listen maybe you should find another job because we're not willing to offer you a raise. Just understand the ramifications when you're going to approach the topic.
