How can I avoid in-growing hairs?
In-growing hairs can avoided to a certain extent. It is very difficult to stop them completely. There are one or two products on the market which help with exfoliation and help to prevent them. The in-growing hair which has curled around upon itself within the follicle and not protruded from the surface of the skin has a tendency to form a little spiral. If the skin is exfoliated - in other words the dead cells from the surface are frequently removed by an exfoliation, abrasive type product or even by a brisk rub with a loafer or brush - then they are less likely to occur. Men get in-growing hairs very often on the neck and they can be quite a problem because they can be very sore and provide a real source of worry and aggravation, because they can form nasty pimples and can, long-term, leave scars. Exfoliation is the best way to remove them. If the start of one is seen, try to persuade the hair tip out when the skin is warm, maybe from a shower, to be eased out almost like a small blackhead can be eased out. That will help it not to curl around upon itself. In-growing hairs are the biggest problem for people who've got curly hair. With straighter hair, it doesn't happen quite as often.
