How does someone become a film critic?
There's no real path to being a film critic. I think a lot of people feel like it's a job they can do. They love movies and they're always recommending them to their friends, and they know when a movie is a piece of crap. But the truth is, there's not a direct path to becoming a film critic. I wrote for my college paper and parlayed that into a freelance job for the Village Voice. I would say that's one way to go. If you're writing about film in school and you have those clips when you're getting out of college, you should submit those to magazines and publications that you're interested in. The problem is your average film critic is a 50 year old balding white guy. There are men and women of color and women reviewers and younger reviewers, but that's your average film critic. I think it's a long road but I think if you're passionate about what you do - you're passionate about movies, you're passionate about writing and good film criticism - you can find work in that field.
