How To Begin To Trace Your Unusual Surname
Nick Barratt (Genealogist) gives expert video advice on: My surname is very unusual, how do I begin to trace it?
My surname is very unusual, how do I begin to trace it?
The more unusual your surname, in many cases, the easier it is going to be to identify it in actual records. But the origin of the surname may well lie overseas. You've certainly got that in the 19th century onwards. We've got a lot of European immigration. But through out all periods of British history you do get that population coming into a country and bringing with them slightly unusual names. The other thing is in order to find those; the surname spelling may have changed over time. Quite often they were spelled phonetically as people heard them and you do get variance within a very well established surname group. The best place to start is the Guild of One-Name Studies, which is an organization based out of genealogists. Their members specialize in looking at very particular surname groups. I know several of those groups are based around the country. So talk to the Guild of One-Name Studies. They will be able to help you get started or put you in touch with researches that have done some work already.
