How To Best Negotiate A Contract For Yourself

Stefanie Schaeffer (Winner, NBC's "The Apprentice" Season 6) gives expert video advice on: What is the best way to negotiate a contract for myself?

What is the best way to negotiate a contract for myself?

That is really a question to be determined on a case-by-case basis. It is really all about what is your list of things, or what is on your priority list. Is it vacation time? Is it benefits? Is it the number of hours you work during per day? Is it your salary? What is going to be your deal breaker? What are certain things you have decided you are not willing to negotiate on. Make sure you understand what those things are before you go into a job negotiation, which might be a second interview, a third interview, a final meet and greet, to meet the partners or whoever it is you are going to be working with. A lot of times they will bring you in, in person when they are going to offer you a position. Sometimes it is done by phone. Be aware of who your audience is and again what your priorities are. There are certain things that you are going to want to throw into your negotiation. And in any situation that I call throw always. There are things that you would like to have, that if given a wish list you would rather have them. You know, I call them the druthers. But that you are willing to live without them if you have to. Understand that you need one or two of those, just so that you can give the appearance of giving something back to them, so that whoever you are negotiating with does not feel like you are getting it all. That it is all give and no take. They want to feel like they got something too. Judges usually say and mediators say, I hate to use the legal examples. But mediators usually say, if everyone leaves miserable, I have done my job because you did not get everything you wanted. So go into a negotiation with that feeling. Here is my wish list. Here is what I am not willing to negotiate on. Make sure that you get the things that are vital to your list. If you can not at least get those things for yourself, you really should consider a different position.
