You can take a t-shirt, you can take a rag, you can wet it, you can place it over your nose and mouth - it's only going to buy you a minute or so, not a lot of time. What it does do is help to filter those products of combustion, which lead to the smoke inhalation, which causes people to become disorientated - they can even go unconscious.
