How To Care For Your Skin After Receiving Radiation Treatment

Harry Saperstein, MD, FAAD (Dermatologist, Clinical Assoc. Professor, Medicine, Private Practice and UCLA) gives expert video advice on: How should I care for my skin after receiving radiation treatment?

How should I care for my skin after receiving radiation treatment?

After radiation treatment to the skin (not just radiation damage that occurs from other types of radiation treatment for other cancers), the skin will often be thin, have dilated blood vessels, have some pigmentary alteration, and be much more fragile and friable to external trauma. Under those circumstances, the most important thing to do, obviously, is to protect it with sunblock in terms of sun exposure. This should be done once or twice daily, as well as using moisturisers throughout the day. Other than that, there is nothing in particular that we have to do after radiation on the long term except to perhaps look at that skin with a jaundiced eye; looking for changes that may occur over time.
