It's important to have a good relationship with your physician if you can. By that I mean someone who you feel comfortable talking to, telling your story to without feeling the need to be defensive, somebody who makes you feel comfortable, and someone who has a level of competence. If you have an allergy, many of them can be treated, and should be treated, successfully and clearly by your family physician. On the other hand, an allergist is a physician who went to medical school, took a residency, or training, in either internal medicine or paediatrics, and then a fellowship in allergic disease. We're specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases.
