John McGrail, C.Ht. (Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist) gives expert video advice on: How do I come out of a hypnotic trance?
How do I come out of a hypnotic trance?
Coming out of hypnotic trance is a transition just like waking up from a nap or a night's sleep. It is a gradual transition back to full conscious awareness and it's usually done over a space of thirty seconds to a minute. Very often counting. Numbers are a very easy way to go up or down in the scale of hypnotic trance. So, if you're in a very deep trance the hypnotherapist will either count up or down, his or her choice, from say five to zero or zero to five. And with each number we get you more in touch with your body, your physical presence. You take a nice deep breath and you feel very relaxed and more and more alert, and then finally at the appropriate number, eyes open wide awake and you're there, you're back. Snapping and clapping are simply signals to the brain and they do have some effect. When we're entering hypnotic trance very often there is sort of a point at which we go the last step if you will and sometimes we use the snap of fingers [snaps] deep sleep, and that just tells the brain "ok, finish releasing." It's often used in a stage show for effect. You don't have to use it. It can or cannot be useful. Some people don't like that, they get so startled they come out of hypnosis so you have to be careful with that.
