How To Contact Loved Ones If The Phone Lines Are Down After An Earthquake

Mark Benthien (Director of Communication, Education, and Outreach, Southern California Earthquake Center ) gives expert video advice on: How do I contact loved ones if the phone lines are down?

How do I contact loved ones if the phone lines are down?

After an earthquake, the first thing that people are going to want to do is contact their loved ones. You want to have two things planned in advance of an earthquake. You want to have a meeting location where people can meet at and unite after the earthquake. If everyone is separated and spread out, you'll likely not be able to get to that location. You'll want to have someone out of state who everyone can call and report how they are doing, so that one person can relay that information to the others. The reason that's important is because after an earthquake and all the phone lines are down, phone companies will be working to get the long distance lines up first before getting the local lines back on board. The local lines need to be kept for emergency response needs, so you'll more likely be able to call someone in a different state than you will be able to call across the city.
