Representing yourself and then meeting up with legal language and procedural rules is a difficult task. You have to be willing to spend the time to look in a law dictionary to find out what these terms mean. Sometimes they dont' have plain meaning because legal terms are abstract and it's not always easy to know exactly what is meant just by reading the definition. So you have to be willing to ask questions if you don't know. If a judge, for example, in the middle of a trial uses a term you don't understand. Just say, "Your honor, I don't understand that term. Can you explain it to me?" If opposing council uses a term that you don't understand you might say, "Your honor, opposing council has used a term that I don't understand. Would she or you please explain it to me?"
