How To Deal With Your Teen's Rebellion
Jayne Major, Ph.D. (Parenting Educator & Child Custody Consultant, Breakthrough Parenting Services, Inc. ) gives expert video advice on: How should I deal with my teen's rebellion?
How should I deal with my teen's rebellion?
If a teenager is rebelling in the sense of talking back, and being rude, and engaging in a power struggle, you have a choice as a parent to not engage in that power struggle. So what a lot of parents will do, is fight back with the child, and now we're into drama instead of logic. So, the logical way of handling a child that's confrontational or in rebellion is to take a deep breath, and step back, and say "I don't appreciate being talked to that way and I don't talk to you that way and I'd like you to explain to me what it is you're really saying." And solve instead of escalate the problem of rebellion. So I say to parents-don't bite the bait of rebellion. You know, the bait of rebellion gets thrown out there, you have a choice. You don't have to bite the bait of rebellion.
