How can I decrease my exposure to indoor VOCs?

What you want to look towards is decreasing the amount of allergens and volatile chemicals that you have in your home. That means cleaning products. That means products from the hardware store that are less volatile, that have less industrial chemicals in them, so you will be looking for things that have been certified as safer by certifying agencies like Green Seal that are low in VOC. Paints, water-based paints are better than oil-based paints. And if you ever use an adhesive or a sealant, labeled for indoor use, because there are often versions you can buy at the hardware store that are labeled for outdoor use. Those are usually much higher with volatile chemicals. So it is becoming a more aware consumer, looking for products that have the Green Seal label and will not off gas into your home's indoor air. Good ventilation, lots of fresh air in the summertime is also a good idea generally to clean out the home's indoor air.
