How do I determine if my cool career is actually the right choice?

If you are feeling bored a lot of the time, your "cool career" is no good. If you are feeling angry or frustrated a lot of the time, the same applies. Are you learning all the time, and yet not learning, where it's so hard that you're frustrated? Are you feeling competent at what you're doing? Are you getting reasonable praise from bosses, customers, vendors, co-workers? Are you making a difference in the world? That doesn't mean you have to save the whales. There are many ways to make a difference. Even a dishwasher makes a difference, ensuring that the plates that the people in the restaurant are going to eat from are sanitary, and don't have little specks of crap on them. You've got to feel meaningful. Otherwise, there's this emptiness in you. Again, as we get older, it's important to be able to look back and be proud of what you've done in your career. That's why I can't begin to understand how anybody would sell tobacco, or sell crap that nobody needs or a product that is truly inferior to something else on the market. But, it doesn't matter what you're doing, as long as you feel good about what you're doing, are paid reasonably, you are not bored, you're getting reasonable praise, and not starving. That's probably not a bad definition of what a good career is.
