How To Enroll Your Child In Public School

Tiffani Chin (Founder/Executive Director, EdBoost Learning Center) gives expert video advice on: How do I enroll my child in public school?

How do I enroll my child in public school?

Usually, enrollment in a public school is pretty easy. You go to the elementary school and they will check to make sure you live in their attendence area and they will enroll your child if you do. For kindergarten there's usually a date when enrollment opens sometime in the spring. I would give the public school a call right after the holidays, right after New Year's, and say, “Hey, when do you enroll kindergarteners?” There's usually some sort of school tour and orientation before enrollment, and sometimes what's called a kindergarten round-up. There's a kindergarten enrollment day, but if you're behind the ball and don't get around to it, or if you move into a new neighborhood, just go into the public elementary school and ask them about enrollment. Every home really belongs to some elementary school's attendance area. There is a school that is your default school. Sometimes there are ways to attend different schools but you have a school that's your default school and that's probably your first stop for enrolling a child. If you're not sure which elementary school that school is I would recommend going to the nearest public school and saying, “Hi, are you my school?” They'll ask you your address and they'll have a map and they'll be able to look and see if you're one of their 'people' or not.
