An extension is a simple form. It's available from the IRS web page; from your various state agencies also. Usually the state agencies will accept the IRS extension form so you don't have to file a separate one with the state, but you fill out the extension form, mail it to the IRS before 15th April, and you'll have an automatic extension for six months. So you've then got from April 15th to October 15th to file your tax return.
