How To Find Out If Your Building Is Listed

Ron Tate (Town Planner) gives expert video advice on: How can I find out if my building is listed?

How can I find out if my building is listed?

Once a building has been subject to examination, if there's a decision to list the property, then the owner of the building will be notified that that's what's intended. So they would have an opportunity at that stage to perhaps raise any objections or concerns, maybe examine the evidence, maybe put some counterarguments together. If that then has been considered and the building has been listed, then you would be notified as the owner. If you're not the original owner at the time it was listed, your solicitor when you buy the property would discover this by making searches of the local authority. But, like conservation areas, if you wanted to check, the local planning authority will have the records of all their listed buildings and their conservation areas. So if you got in touch with their historic building section conservation officer, they would be able to advise you.
