Most electricity providers and most utilities actually promote their green energy, and ask customers to specify that they want it. Power companies perhaps sometimes even charge a little bit more, which allows the utility to go out and make contracts with clean energy providers, trying to incentivise more people to go into those businesses. Imagine; it takes a good deal of money if you want to build a wind farm for example, and create enough electricity to sell it to a large utility. So, one way to make that happen is to get enough customers who say "Hey I'll pay a little more," or "I want green energy and I want that wind power. So, here's my extra every month, utility company; please go out and procure that energy from that wind farm so that investor can build and sell it to me."
