How To Follow The Best Advice To Prepare You For Childbirth
What's the best advice I could have to prepare me for childbirth?
To prepare you for childbirth I would say keep an open mind. You should discuss your likes and dislikes with your physician. Patients often come to me and say, "here's my birth plan". And the birth plan includes things like, I don't want an episiotomy or I do want an episiotomy rather than tearing in childbirth. I don't want anesthesia, or I do want anesthesia. I'd like to have my baby placed on my chest right away. I would like to allow the cord to stop pulsating before you clamp it. I'd like my husband to cut the cord. I'd like my mother to be in the room but she can't look down below. There's all these requests for during childbirth. What I recommend to everybody is to keep an open mind in preparationn for childbirth. Every physician would like to provide you with the best childbirth experience possible. We want you to go into labour with an open mind, enjoy being in labour, enjoy having your baby, and then have a lifetime together with your child that's fantastic. But, things can go differently from how you anticipate during childbirth. So although you may have strongly requested not to have an epidural, you don't know what's in store for you during childbirth. If you end up having significant amount of childbirth pain and want relief, we want you to feel that your decision is justified. If you want pain relief you can have it. Don't be disappointed by that. So having an open mind in preparation for childbirth is the best piece of advice I can give.
