Getting clients is a very important part of photography. Self-promotion and marketing plays a much greater role than I expected it would, and there's various ways to get clients. I advertise in print media but I also advertise on the Web for private clients and for event photography. A large amount of the work also comes through word of mouth, particularly editorial photography -- once you know someone in the magazine they are more likely to call you up again. Getting to know those people is the difficult part, and the traditional way is that you show your portfolio, which is a large book containing about twenty of your prints, and you just knock on doors. But now more and more people are relying on their websites, so having a good website is absolutely key to marketing yourself.
