How do I get more involved in my child's school life?

It's really easy to get involved in your child's school life. What I would ask you to do as a parent, is, first of all, talk to the principal. If there's an assistant principal there, if there's a school counselor at the school, you can talk with them. You can even talk to another parent, perhaps one that's involved with the PTA. The school secretary can steer you. There's a lot of resources in the school for a parent, perhaps a little timid about how to go in and how to get involved. But there's a lot of ways to do that. And basically, it's making yourself known, presenting yourself to school people, even to the child's classroom teacher, this will ensure that you'll get plenty of advice. Different levels of involvement, and the classroom teacher, for example, can clearly delineate that. From a day to day kind of involvement, to perhaps a weekly involvement. Being a room mom: for example, every Friday there's a special activity that you're involved in. Perhaps being a school site council parent, which may mean involvement at a larger level, with school organization and school structure, looking at the curriculum etc. That kind of involvement means perhaps once a month meeting with a parent, and other groups of parents. Of course, there's also the PTA, which is really strongly involved in raising funds to support the instructional program and provide monies for teachers to do good things for kids. So there's a lot of opportunities to get involved with your child's school life.
